This painting was developed from several similar pictures that took a small river acting as the subject of many of them. The ‘river’ was in fact a drainage passage for an area of wetlands in Suffolk that took off floodwater to the sea. It was bordered by fields of rough pasture and some that had been ploughed with trees and reed beds along the waterside. My interest in this painting is the pattern making in the composition that creates boundaries and forms from the elements around the river.
