In the Medina
In the Medina
Medinas are closed courtyards, often home to families living as neighbours. In this painting there are elements of vines and doorways all against the indigenous colours of their surroundings.

- About. Medinas are closed courtyards, often with many families living as neighbours. A bit like the old closed squares that were built as sheltered accommodation, in the U.K. The painting features old vines, doorways and windows set against a wall, the indigenous colour of dark pink and terracotta of their surroundings.
The painting uses loose brushwork on a pink ground with light reflecting at the top of the picture through the heavy paint of the twisted vine stems. Objects shown in the composition are roughly sketched in using vibrant colours present along the deeper pink wall. Although the items are not accurately described they are presented as abstracted forms in a balanced arrangement, allowing a visual journey around the painting.
