Last month I wrote about the need for more devoted time to painting, and partly that was because there was no desperate need to express my current library of images in paint, but this month my long awaited trip to Tuscany has provided me with a wealth of material and a hunger to convey some of that experience.
What a great country! I stayed in a small hilltop town called Casole D Elsa that commanded wonderful vistas in every direction as well as providing some ancient mellow stone buildings that were all the better for the seeming neglect that they shared with every visitor. It was a short visit of only 5 days which should have been much longer, but enough time to record the ever changing light that started with wonderful misty sunrises through to bright blinding overhead sunlight on shade hidden streets, and finishing with low sunsets and long shadows. I don’t know yet how these ideas and memories will filter through my abstract painting process, but the reality of this experience will somehow take charge of the process and hopefully my next work will be a personal reflection of that visit.
Here are some of those wonderful images from Tuscany and one of the first attempts to convey that in paint.
