The family visit to Southwold in January was a time to reflect and gather some inspiration for forthcoming work and to focus on some changes I want to make to my paintings.

I feel that I need to concentrate more on the work of ‘picture making’ instead of letting the subject dictate the positioning of images in a painting. I hope to do this by arranging my subject matter into structured images which still represent the idea of the painting, but not necessarily as it is portrayed in the reference material. For instance to date I have always respected the skyline a painting at the top of the work – I hope sometimes to do away with this convention by either ignoring it, or placing what might reference sky somewhere else in the picture. The essence of this endeavor will be to make a ’picture’ from the subject, instead of producing what could be an obvious replication. This could be a complete juxtaposition of some, or all of the elements, or simply be another way of transposing what is all too evident, into a more intriguing arrangement that maybe just a hint of the subject.

Lofty ideals I know, but I feel that given time and practice I can change the way I have constructed previous work into something fresh and interesting with perhaps a greater visual depth.

Time will tell – but here are some beginnings:
