The last gallery show of the year was at the Espacio Gallery during the first week of December and proved to be an interesting move away from the standard gallery format of precisely hung paintings. The objective was to display paintings together with the working process that helped to create each piece. Sketches, trial paintings, layout and modifications were all shown alongside the finished work. As with most exhibits that require more than a cursory evaluation, the visitor was required to spend a little time and effort to read and explore and share in the creative process of each painting; some of course did this but by far the majority viewed it all in standard ‘gallery mode’ and probably missed the point of the show. I hope they enjoyed most of the paintings and exhibits.
Apart from preparation and presentation of this show, the rest of the month was one of very little progress with any sort of finished work, although much thought about what might be achieved next year was high on the agenda. I feel that I produced a fair quantity of work during the year which expressed my ‘landscape experiences’ with varying degrees of success, but I have also lately come appreciate the abstract qualities in other landscape artist’s work, and I am determined to steer towards this way of working next year.
Christmas was a home event with family, but afterwards we booked a house near Southwold in Suffolk over New Year and this gave me an opportunity to gather material for fresh creative outburst in the next few weeks.
Here are some of those wonderful dreamy landscape views.
