A rather late entry on the blog this month as October was hectic to say the least!
Although our ‘Points of View’ exhibition at the Espacio Gallery wasn’t until the third week of the month, it was a lot of preparation and framing to get the work ready on time. Having found a good framing section of white ‘L’ section wood for all of the larger paintings it was a case of fitting and packing.
The gallery looked superb and the hang was a great success, giving space for larger work and grouping small work to give it a cohesion, all of which illustrated the title of the show very well. The five of us showing had a really good week with some very encouraging comments and sales.
Four of us then had work displayed in the Camden Image gallery the following week end, and so Monday afterwards – I was all galleried out! The problem now is, where do I put all the pictures because as you might realise, they didn’t all sell! It is going to be a Portatcabin or the loft – hopefully for not too long as I must find another outlet that might like to try selling them.
Having bought a great book about Patrick Heron and his work, I was delighted to read how he progressed the style and content of his work throughout his life. He seems not to have minded making sweeping changes not only the content and form, and means of applying paint, but to new ways of seeing. Very encouraging as I too feel as I see the work of other artists that interest me, new windows open and abstract concepts become far more interesting and worthy of pursuit. Good representational artwork still holds an interest for me, but I find so much more can be depicted and expressed using abstract constructs.
I had the fortune to visit Jane Lewis at her recent exhibition at Flatford Mill gallery and had a very interesting conversation and insight about that very subject. The ability of translating into paint, emotions and observations that one experiences, when considering a picture. If you happen to read this Jane – many thanks for the meeting and our conversation.
I had another go submitting work to the The Royal Institute of Oil Painters again this year, but although my work passed the pre- selection round it got no further. Anyway 2 trips to the Mall wasn’t all that bad as I fitted in several other shows whilst in town. I read recently that ‘ for every rejection – it is one step nearer a YES’ quite a comforting thought!
The next event I will showing is at the Espacio Gallery and is fast approaching. It is called ‘Making Seen’ from 3 Dec – 9 December and is a novel idea as it will give us the chance to show our working drawings and sketches alongside the related works. There are 13 of us in the show so there won’t be a lot of work to display, but it will hopefully open up conversations about our creative processes. If any of you can make it (see the poster and invite in the News tab on this website) I would love to see you there Thursday evening, Friday & Saturday during those dates.
