Life seems to be getting busier and although it is still wrapped up in art activities I fear painting is falling behind and I am spending more time on the computer trying to solve problems that relate to my art practice. Social media is a great thing but it certainly can take over when you try to keep up with ‘friends’ and tweets.
The Tuscany based paintings that I was keen to explore last month helped me hit upon a very productive few weeks in the latter part of July and early August, and which fortunately produced some good work. I felt the need to work fairly large and so my 40 x 40 cm. format on plywood boards provided a good template for a more abstract take on those languid sunny vistas of the Tuscan landscape, which I remembered from photos and sketches of the trip. I have posted some of paintings on the ‘New Work’ page of the site so you can get a preview of what to expect at my gallery show in October at the Espacio Gallery which I am sharing with four other artists.
The show is titled Points of View and will run for a week with the five of us literally showing landscape paintings all from our different perspective and interpretation of ‘landscape’. I have known all the artists for a number of years now and we have all shared our thoughts at times and have all developed our ideas over the years, each of us seeking to make our individual marks in painterly expression. Cary, Margaret and I all went on the Tuscany trip and it will be interesting to see how we have all viewed the venture with our own perspective.
I have tried very hard to ‘escape’ from the literal and put down to experience rather than the depiction of the viewed scene, and feel that very slowly I am loosing those literal images and innovating some forms and marks that more adequately express experience. At the moment I love the juxtaposition of recognised forms and abstract marks and movement.
I leave you with the poster that advertises the show and hope anyone who can visit Espacio will come and hopefully meet us and enjoy what we have to offer form the paintings and prints on the walls.
