November has been a slow month and I had hoped to produce a lot of work from my Suffolk images and sketches, but somehow not much has materialized The paintings have be slow to emerge and those I have done have to some degree taken slightly different directions.

These were two that I selected for my Cork street Open submission only to find out at the end of the month that neither were deemed suitable in the pre-selection round. The other was ‘The Honiston Pass’ painting that I was quite happy with and featured on the front of a flyer advertising the Insight Exhibition of selected work from students, staff & painters attending the School. This again was not selected by the Cork Street selectors, so all in all a disappointing result.
I did no better with my submissions for the Eastern Approaches Open Exhibition show in St Albans. I tried a few more abstract pictures which in hindsight were perhaps lacking in quality and I should have not tried to second guess what I thought would be the criteria.
The year comes to an end at Insight during the first week of December so it might be a good time for reflection over the year’s output and see what could be the aims for next year. Although my submission to the Institute of Oil Painters was not accepted, I was heartened to see that it received a ‘D’( for doubtful) which at least means that it was viewed twice and then rejected, and I feel that the simplicity of that painting was its strongest quality. With that in mind, my thoughts are that this may be my approach to new paintings.
